Why Isn’t My Site On Google?!?!?!

SEO ServicesThere are many website development companies out there. Some offer premium custom services, some offer template based websites and some offer DIY websites. All of which cost YOU money. The cost to develop a website can range from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.Traditional logic might lead you to believe that the more you spend on your website, the more likely you are to show up in search engines. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. A “pretty” website or an “expensive” website does not determine your search engine rankings.

Here’s a very common misconception we run into on a weekly basis – We’ve seen so many customers come into our office complaining that there website just isn’t showing up on Google. They feel that the investment they made in the development of their website should get their website ranking #1 on Google. Again, this just couldn’t be further from the truth, let me give you an analogy;

Let’s say you choose to open a shoe store. You find a location, you build your inventory, you paint, modify, construct, create signage and eventually open your doors to the public. You have put quite a bit of money into your shoe store and now it’s time to open for business. A month’s gone by and still very few people are coming through your doors. Why is this? Why if you’ve just put thousands of dollars into creating a beautiful store front with beautiful signage and all of the hottest shoes in town, why is no one coming to your store?

Chances are, you forgot to spend time and money in “promoting your store”. Sure, you’ll catch the people that stumble by your store, maybe get a few referrals, but how do you make sure your store is visible to the masses? You must promote! Yes, you’ve already spent a ton of money in opening your store, but you still MUST set aside a budget for promoting your store.

It’s exactly the same with your website. Again, no matter how pretty your website is, no matter how much money you’ve spent on it, if you don’t invest in promoting and optimizing your website, you’re not going to be seen.

Not sure what steps to take in promoting your website? If you are not careful, you could jump into unnecessary means of promoting your website. I had a client walk in that had signed up for a $1000 p/month campaign through a company claiming to be Google. First off, Google will never solicit your business, they are doing just fine, they don’t need to solicit sales. This client signed up with this “SEO Company” that claimed they could get him tons of traffic. Well, anyone that spends $1000 a month can get traffic to their website, but is their website optimized for this traffic? Were they targeting the right demographic? The right geographic location? Were there any changes made to the website to be sure people knew what to do when they got to the website? Was there any “onsite optimization” done to the website so eventually the site would begin ranking in the FREE searches? The sad answer to all is NO. This SEO Company had no intention of really helping this person’s website, they were purely in it for the money.

Before heading down the path of promoting your website, stop by our office or give us a call. We will be glad to analyze your website and your market. We’ll develop the best marketing plan for your website.

I have my website, now what?

The Business Card Shoppe’s services have evolved greatly since we opened for business in 2007. We quickly found that our clients were looking for one place to take care of all of their marketing needs. For the past two years, we have noticed that many of our clients love their website, but just aren’t sure how to market their website.

We’ve found, over the past couple of years, that marketing a website and SEO go hand in hand. We were handing over beautiful websites that were performing fairly well due to the standard SEO we’ve always built into our websites. But, in getting to understand SEO, we’ve realized that there is so much more to marketing a website and simply building in standard SEO than we could have ever imagined.

There may have been a time, many years ago when you would just build a website for hats and a few weeks later, you would Google “hats” and just like magic, there you were on the first page. But, it simply isn’t that simple any more, you know how many hat websites there are? They are all competing for that first page. And they are all spending a good deal of time and money to get there. Standard SEO simply does not cut it as it used to.

So now that you have your website, what can you do to promote it?

1. Post the URL to your website on everything! Business cards, letterhead, envelopes, car magnets, the signature of your email (very important), banners, literally everything that also includes your company logo.

2. Blog, blog, blog – If you don’t have a blog built into your website, build one in! Search engines LOVE content, they will visit your site frequently if they see new content. You might think that no one will read your blog, why would anyone be interested in what you have to say? Well, the fact is, you could be right. I personally think there are very few people that will sit and read my own blogs. But, the search engines love what I have to say. ESPECIALLY if it’s unique!

3. Social Media – You may despise social media, you might even think it’s a joke, but guess what, I can guarantee your competition is using social media. What’s the benefit? I believe that the connections I create with other local business owners benefits my business. You’ll run into those clients that actually find it easier to communicate through Facebook than to pick up the phone and call you. I have answered many, many, many questions through Facebook for my clients. The other benefit is backlinks, it’s rare that I publish a post that doesn’t contain a link to my website. Search engines love backlinks. Get Social!

4. Pay Per Click – Again, the pessimist my say, “That’s ridiculous, I’m not going to pay for someone to visit my site!”. And I’ll say once again, “Your competitor is!”. Even though we have a very strong showing on Google for SEO Services,Small Business Marketing Services, Website Design Services, and Business Card Printing, I still run a consistent Pay Per Click campaign. Why? The answer is simply, Marketshare. I want to take as many spots as I can on that first page of Google. I want to dominate. If you run your campaign correctly, your ROI for Pay Per Click can be great. Make sure you get some advice before diving it, it can become very discouraging if not done correctly. And, VERY IMPORTANT here; Don’t run a Pay Per Click campaign without making sure your website has been optimized for at least a few of the keywords you are using on your Pay Per Click campaign. Otherwise, you just won’t get the marketshare you should be looking for.

5. Track your success – I’ve always utilized various tools on the internet that have helped me track the progress of my website marketing and SEO. A website I use very frequently is Hubshouts Website Grader. This website will give you a great deal of information on how your website is performing and offer many suggestions on how to increase your website’s grade. One quick note, if you are hiring an SEO company, make sure you run their website through this grader. If they aren’t scoring at least 75+, then find another SEO company, trust me! Another great website is Link Popularity.com. This website will tell you how many websites link back to yours. this is very important to search engines. You must have strong, relevant websites linking in to yours. Your nephews website about cool rock bands may not do the trick, unless your website is about cool rock bands of course.

This is just some of what can be done to market your website and to increase your traffic. If you find after a good six months or so that you still aren’t receiving the traffic you want, start looking for a good SEO company that can help. Again, be very cautious when searching for an SEO company. Even though we offer SEO services, I would be more than happy to check out the company you are currently using or intend to use. This may not be what you want to hear, but if you are paying $100 to $200 a month for SEO, STOP! They are not doing what they need to do to build your website’s SEO. SEO is a very, very time consuming process, and any SEO company that is doing their job, is most likely going to push your budget a bit. But in the long run, it could be very well worth it to get you ahead of your competition.

SEO is not rocket science

Search Engine Optimization is really not that complicated. Focus on your website’s content, make sure your content is unique, post blogs as frequently as possible and publish articles on various sites that relate to your industry. The average website owner can accomplish this task fairly easily. So why are there so many SEO companies out there wanting to charge $500+ per month to run an SEO campaign for you?

The answer is fairly simple, though SEO is not rocket science, it IS time consuming. between posting your own blogs, writing and submitting articles, maintaining a presence on social media and tracking your results, you could spend upwards of 20 hours per week with maintaining your own SEO program. Chances are, if you are not an SEO company, you should be spending that valuable time working your business and servicing your customers.

Hiring a credible SEO company allows you to focus on your business. Though you can accomplish these time consuming tasks on your own, it could take upwards of a year to a year and a half for your page ranking in search engines to notice your efforts. An SEO company can literally accomplish the same results in 3-6 months. A professional SEO service can bring other techniques to the table that you may never have heard of that can additionaly help your page rank.

There is nothing wrong with doing some studying about SEO. But, I would strongly recommend using a reputable SEO company to accomplish this for you. My recommendations for hiring a reputable SEO company is first to find one that lives in the same country you live in. This is because SEO companies typically write articles that are submitted to various directories. You don’t want your articles to have spelling or grammar errors. Second, run a quick test on the website of the company you are thinking of hiring. A great website to run this test on is WebsiteGrader.com. This grader will tell you if the company you are considering has accomplished their own SEO for their website. DO NOT hire an SEO company that grades less than 70. In fact, the closer to 100 they are, chances are the most reliable they may be.

You may pay a pretty penny to have this work done for you, but the cost of an SEO company is not long term. Their job is to get your website to rank as quickly as possible with the keywords you choose. Once this has been accomplished, usually within 6 months, you can back off of your SEO campaign and simply run a maintenance program. Though you should check your stats frequently because there is a chance your competitor wants what you have.

If money is an issue, think about what you are spending on the phone book, radio advertising even tv advertising. These are mediums that are struggling to compete against the internet. Maybe think of cutting back a bit on these outbound methods of marketing and focusing some of your marketing dollars to more inbound methods of marketing, the internet.
